Homily on Luke 4:24-30: Overcome Rejection ( Monday the 24th of March 2025)

Praise be to Jesus Christ

A humble potter loved his craft deeply. He carefully shaped simple pots, infusing beauty into every touch of the clay as he worked in his quiet village. Nevertheless, regardless of his dedication, those in his own community failed to see the value of his work. Even those who were closest to him paid him little attention and considered him insignificant and of little importance. However, the potter did not waver in his commitment to his craft and continued to work quietly and patiently, trusting in his calling.

One day the neighbouring villagers held a local competition and the potter entered his creations with hope in his heart. To his surprise, the judges and visitors all from distant places marvelled at the simple beauty of his pottery so much so that orders for his work began to pour in from many villages beyond and far. Once overlooked by his own people, the humble but trusting potter was now recognised and appreciated though not by his own.

This story connects today’s Gospel from Luke 4:24-30 in a beautiful way. In this passage we witness a similar experience of the courage and rejection of Jesus, simple and humble like the potter. After thirty long years of quiet preparation and forty days of intense fasting, prayer, and penance, Jesus returns to his village in Nazareth where he grew up. One day Jesus read the scripture passages in the synagogue. He read with sincerity, truth and love, and it was here Jesus first proclaimed his mission. However, instead of acceptance by his own rabbis, his words were met with ridicule and disbelief. Those who had known him from birth turned against him with scorn in the same way the potter in the story experienced. Rather than recognising the wisdom and power in Jesus message, they were filled with anger and indignation. Peoples rejection was so severe that they even sought to throw him off a cliff at one instant in his mission.

This pattern of rejection is not new in biblical history as many of the Old Testament prophets also faced great resistance and scornful rejection. Their warnings to the people to mend their ways and their pleas for conversion, justice and mercy were often met with hostility by the very people they attempted to help. Many people cannot accept the truth no matter how pure it may be most especially when it challenges their expectations and comforts.

This Gospel passage carries a profound message for each one of us. There are moments in life when our best efforts are not met with love but with rejection, sometimes even from those closest to us. A teacher’s wisdom may go unheeded by his students. A parent’s advice may be ignored by their children and a friend’s sincere concern may be dismissed as futile. Furthermore, a wife may not acknowledge her husband’s sacrifices or a wife’s dedication and effort may be spurned and met with  constant criticism from her husband. When we too face rejection or disapproval, we feel worthless and great sadness and it can leave a deep emotional wound which is often hard to overcome.

Jesus stands on a hilltop, speaking with determination while people in Nazareth turn away in rejection. The words "Overcome Rejection" appear as if Jesus is saying them, symbolizing the strength to persevere in faith.

Yet, like the humble potter who remained steadfast, or the prophets who continued to proclaim the truth despite resistance, we too are called to persevere. The lives of saints offer shining examples of this perseverance. Consider St. John of the Cross. Known for his deep faith and gentle spirit, he endured rejection and hardship, even from those within his own religious community. Yet, instead of succumbing to despair, he remained faithful to his calling. Like a small plant struggling to grow in rocky soil, his inner strength flourished despite adversity. His life teaches us that true success is not measured by immediate recognition but by the quiet resilience of a heart devoted to truth and love.

If Jesus was discouraged by his first rejection; his mission would never have continued and we would never have known the heavenly reward, and Jesus would not have become the Saviour of the universe. Even though he faced rejection, scorn, and even betrayal, yet he pressed on with courage and fulfilled the will of the heavenly Father. In this life we will all come across rejection, difficulties and opposition even from those who are closest to us, but we must not be discouraged or disappointed and should never give up. Instead, we are called to face our struggles with faith and perseverance knowing that God’s purpose will ultimately prevail.

The first public speech of Jesus was a trial of courage. Though his words were rejected that day, they planted seeds that would later bear fruit in hearts far beyond his hometown. In every rejection lies the possibility of a future harvest. Just as the potter’s art was eventually appreciated for its true value in others who were not his own, so too did the message of Christ take root and blossom in the world for generations to come.

Let us Pray: Lord, grant us the strength to rise above rejection, the patience to continue our mission, and the grace to trust that, in Your time, the seeds we sow will bear fruit. Amen.

  1. Truly said. We are living in the world where good behaviours or good deeds are not recognised or appreciated. But every good deed will definitely bear everlasting fruits sooner or later.
