A Homily on Matthew 1:18 – 24 | Responsibility as a Sign of God’s Trust (18-12-25)

A reflection on Matthew 1:18 – 24, on how God entrusts His plan through responsibility. (18-12-25)

Praise be to Jesus Christ 

In a small town, a pious couple waited many years for the gift of a child, praying with hope and trusting God quietly through each passing season. When the child was finally born, joy filled their home, but it did not last long, for the doctor gently explained that the child had special needs and would require care throughout life. The words brought fear and confusion, and many questions rose naturally in their hearts about the future, their strength, and the meaning of this unexpected path.

For several days, their home remained silent, filled with tears and heavy prayer, until slowly their way of thinking began to change. They stopped asking why this had happened and began asking how they could love this child well and protect the life God had placed in their hands. One evening, as they sat together in quiet reflection, the father spoke with calm conviction, saying that if God had given this special child to them, it could only mean that God trusted them. From that moment, nothing became easier, but everything became purposeful. This quiet acceptance helps us enter deeply into today’s Gospel.

In the Gospel according to Matthew, Mary receives an explanation, but Joseph receives a responsibility. God explains His plan to Mary with clarity, but to Joseph He offers no detailed answers, only a situation that calls for trust and obedience. When Joseph comes to know about Mary’s pregnancy, his whole inner world is shaken, because he loves Mary deeply and at the same time desires to remain faithful to God, and now these two loves seem to stand in painful tension. The Gospel calls him a just man, not because he follows the law blindly, but because he allows mercy to guide his decisions. Instead of exposing Mary or defending his own honour, he chooses the quiet path of love, deciding to step aside silently and to carry the burden within his own heart.

It is only later, in the stillness of a dream, that God speaks to Joseph. Even then, God does not remove all confusion or promise an easy future. He gives a simple and demanding command, asking Joseph not to be afraid, to take Mary as his wife, and to accept the child entrusted to him. No explanation is offered about how people will judge him or how difficult the road ahead will be. What Joseph receives is not clarity, but responsibility.

Joseph wakes from sleep and obeys without delay. In that silent obedience, his faith becomes visible. By naming the child Jesus, Joseph publicly accepts him as his own and gives him a place in the family of David. In this simple act, the ancient promise spoken through the prophet Jeremiah, about a righteous branch who would bring safety to God’s people, begins to take flesh within an ordinary home.

Saint Joseph speaks no words in the Gospel, yet his life becomes a living sermon. God entrusts His own Son not to wealth or power, but to the steady hands of a faithful and responsible man. Joseph teaches us that holiness is often quiet, hidden in daily work, patient care, and faithful presence.

This Gospel touches our family life deeply. Many parents do not receive explanations for the struggles that enter their homes, whether through sickness, disability, or unexpected hardship. They receive responsibility. Many families are asked to carry burdens they never planned, and like Joseph, they are invited not to understand everything, but to remain faithful. Advent reminds us that when responsibility is accepted with love, Christ is born again in our homes.
