A simple and faith-filled homily on Mathew 18:1-5,19 reminding us that our Guardian Angels are God’s gift, always beside us to protect, guide, and lead us closer to Him. (02-10-25)

Praise be to Jesus Christ

Once, a 12-year-old boy ran to his mother and began to narrate an incident.  This boy was very much interested in climbing trees. One day, he was climbing to a high branch of a tree. But the branch on which he held was a try branch, and it broke, and he fell. Then, to his great surprise, he felt as if someone lifted him, and he managed to hold another branch. If that had not happened, he would have fallen from such a height. His mother was surprised and, shivering and crying, she said, “Oh! My God, it must have been your Guardian Angel who saved you.”

Dear brothers and sisters, today the church celebrates a special Feast, the feast of the Guardian Angels.  This feast, the feast of Guardian angels, must be a special feast to everyone. And everyone must celebrate this great feast with great gratitude and enthusiasm. It is because by celebrating the feast of guardian angels, we are celebrating the feast of our best friend who has been with us from the very beginning of our existence. The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us: “From infancy to death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession” (CCC 336).

Jesus speaks to us in today’s gospel that: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (Mt. 18:10). These words of Jesus reveal two great truths: that every one of us has a Guardian Angel. Then each Guardian Angel remains before God, praying for us, protecting us, and guiding us.

As we read the Holy Bible, we encounter examples of angels who walk with God’s people. In the Old Testament, it is very clear that how the angel of the Lord protected the people of  Israel on their journey from Egypt: “Behold, I send an angel before you, to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place which I have prepared” (Exod. 23:20). In the book of Daniel 6:22 we see how the angel shut the lions’ mouths in the den of Daniel. In the New Testament, we see that when Peter was in jail, an angel freed him from prison (Acts 12:7). These are not mere stories, but real interventions of God through His messengers.

It is truly remarkable to learn about the experiences of saints with their Guardian Angels. One of the best examples could be of St. Padre Pio. He often asked people to send him their Guardian Angels with prayer requests.  It means that he could see the Guardian Angels. It is said that St. Francis of Assisi used to thank his Guardian Angel for protecting him in moments of temptation. Thomas Aquinas, the angelic doctor, teaches us that angels illuminate our minds and help us discern God’s will.

Please consider this: every moment of our lives, whether we are walking on a busy street, studying in our room, sitting at our workplace, or even when we are asleep, our Guardian Angels are beside us. When one chooses good, their guardian angel rejoices. When one turns away from God, their angel weeps. But never, ever does our angel abandon us.

It is also important to remember that though our Guardian Angels are with us always, they never take away our freedom. When we sin, it hurts them because they love us. But when we try to live good, holy lives, we can feel their guidance and love more clearly.

So how can we honour our Guardian Angels?

  1. Pray – Say this simple prayer every day:
Angel of God, my guardian dear,
to whom God’s love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side,
to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.
  1. Celebrate – Celebrate – If possible, go to Mass today, and as often as you can. That will bring great joy to your Guardian Angel. You can also celebrate this feast—as it is your best friend’s feast—personally, maybe with a chocolate or a small treat, and remember and thank God for the gift of this faithful companion to you.

Jesus, help me to walk in the way that my Guardian Angel shows me. Amen.
