A lovely Meditation on Luke 6:12-19, exploring how Jesus’ prayerful selection of the twelve apostles teaches us to seek God’s guidance in every choice, especially in family and daily life. (28-10-25)

Prise be to Jesus Christ

Sometimes, life gives us choices that feel heavier than others. I want you to think for a moment. Imagine a young person at a crossroads. One path is easy, popular, and comfortable. The other is difficult, unknown, but somehow feels right. What would you do? That night, this person sits quietly, maybe by a window, in a little corner, thinking and praying. Her mind is busy, but her heart is listening. Slowly, she realises that the best decisions do not come in a hurry. They come when we pause, reflect, and ask God to show the way.
This is precisely what Jesus did. Luke tells us that before choosing the twelve apostles, Jesus spent the whole night in prayer, yes, all night. Not for show, not because he had to, but because these men would become the pillars of his Church. They would carry on his mission after him. Choosing well takes time. It takes care. It takes prayer.
We all know this in our lives, don’t we? Every day we make choices: small or big choices. Sometimes it is what we say to our spouse. Sometimes it is how we guide our children. Sometimes it is whom we trust, what career we follow, or even whom we marry. Every choice shapes our story. And Jesus shows us that the best choices occur when we ask God for help, when we pause to reflect, and when we think carefully.
Today we celebrate the feast of Sts Simon and Jude. Simon had been a zealot, full of fire and anger. Jude… people often forgot him. But Jesus saw something meaningful in their hearts. He saw faith, willingness, and love. He chose them. And because of that choice, they became pillars of the Church. God’s way of choosing is not like the way of the world. He does not choose only what is strong or famous, but He chooses hearts ready to follow.

And this is not new. Think of Abraham in the Old Testament—a simple man, called to become the father of nations. Moses, a shepherd, was named to lead a people. God’s choices are always about faith, courage, and willingness to serve.
In our own homes, our choices may not build nations, but they make something very precious: love, faith, prayer, respect. Choosing how we speak, how we act, and how we guide our children, even in small daily choices, shapes our future.
Even Goethe said, “Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.” Boldness is important. But without prayer and care, boldness can lead us astray.
Jesus teaches us to pray before making a choice. Think before you act. Listen to your heart. Trust God. And then choose. Every choice, small or big, can build a life of faith, hope, and love.

Jesus, before I choose anything in my life, please let me know your will.
