A Reflection on John 4:39–42: Jesus Knows Everything I Have Done – A Heartfelt Homily on John 4:39–42 with a Story

Praise be to Jesus Christ

Once there lived two intimate friends, and they were walking near a mango garden. One of the boys said, “Come, let’s take a few… no one is around.” The other hesitated. He did not want to steal, but he also did not want to offend his friend. So he said, “You go and I will wait here near the gate. If someone comes, I will make a sound.”

The first boy, looked around and jumped in and slowly moved towards a mango tree. Just as he reached to pluck a mango, he heard a sound from outside. He stopped and hid himself. After a moment, he tried again but, again came the sound.  He became afraid and dropped the plan, and carefully ran out. “Who’s there?” he asked.

The friend outside said softly, “No one was there. It was me. My mother always says, ‘Even if nobody sees, Jesus sees everything.’ That’s why I warned you.”

Dear brothers and sisters, today’s Gospel has something similar—maybe even deeper. A Samaritan woman comes to draw water from the well. She is alone, maybe tired of the world, maybe hiding from people. But she meets Jesus. He doesn’t accuse her. He doesn’t shout. But what He says touches her deeply: “You have had five husbands, and the man you live with now is not your husband.”

And her reaction is powerful. She doesn’t hide. She doesn’t argue. She runs back to her village and says, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have done.”

She doesn’t say He gave her a miracle. She doesn’t say He healed her. What touched her was this: He knew everything about her… and still He spoke to her kindly. He saw her—not just her face, but her whole life—and did not reject her. That is what changed her.

My friends, Jesus sees everything about us. Not just what we show on the outside. He sees our past, our pain, our secret sins, our broken dreams. We can hide from people. We can hide from society. But we cannot hide from Him. And here is the beauty: even though He sees everything—we are still loved.

That woman became a messenger. Not because she knew big theology. But because she had an experience: someone saw her completely… and did not push her away.

Maybe we, too, carry things inside. Maybe we think, if people really knew me, they would avoid me. But Jesus is not like that. He knows. And He stays.

Think of Saint Peter. Jesus knew Peter would deny Him three times. Still, He called him the rock. Think of Saint Augustine. His life was wild, sinful—but God saw the thirst in him. When Augustine finally turned to God, he said, “You were with me, but I was not with you.”

My dear ones, Jesus is at the well of your life, just like He was at that Samaritan woman’s well. He’s not far. He’s not angry. He sees. And still, He waits for us to speak to Him.

That boy near the mango tree was right. No one may be watching—but Jesus sees. And not to punish, but to save. Let’s not hide from Him anymore. Let us come to Him honestly. Because once He touches our heart, like the woman in the Gospel, we too will become people who can say, “Come and see.”

Lord Jesus, you see everything in me—yet you still love me. Help me to walk in your truth. Amen.
